Its display is truly high-resolution and crystal clear. Inside-out tracking of Oculus Rift S is another home-run and tracks body movement 99% accurately.

With the Oculus Touch controller, its accuracy in tracking is perfect and makes a difference. No need for external sensors means less hardware to deal with and less complexity in set up.

Nothing is stopping you from extending your room-scale experience, just its cables, which are mostly attached to your PC. Which means its room-scale environment area is dependent upon the wires.

Why Rift S?

Facebook has made some strides since 2018; With the help of Oculus, it designed a phone-friendly Oculus Go and the standalone Oculus Quest VR headset.

But initially, neither of them require a PC to run. It was a need for a High-end, PC-based VR headset to run the high-end and extreme perfection graphical games. Then there came Oculus Rift S and changed everything.

The first thing to get is the headset is a lot easier to set up as compared to the Original one & Oculus Quest. There are no lighthouse sensors to deal with, which means no external sensors and which leads to ease in setting up this headset.

The Rift S provides a tethered & immersive virtual experience. The whole time you will be in your VR, the more you’ll have to deal with your PC, and that’s why it’s better to develop a sixth sense for the position of the cable.

At first look, Oculus S seems bulkier than the Original Rift & Oculus Quest, but it’s a more compact & more straightforward version. The face of the Oculus S is not curved like its predecessors.

There is an “Oculus” logo at the top center of the faceplate. With the addition of an LED indicator and two cameras on the lower-side. There are three additional tracking cameras on the headset located all around the headset.

Setup

Setting up the Oculus S is the most straightforward job in the history of VR tethered headsets. Just download the Oculus app, and it took 13.7 GB of your PC space.

Once it is downloaded and installed successfully, Connect your Mini DisplayPort and USB Type-A cables to your PC. Insert the AA batteries into your Oculus Touch controllers. Set up the “Guardian” & perform a quick tutorial. That’s it. Enjoy!

Home

Its official home is the “Oculus Home.” Once you successfully through from the initial setup, You’ll be thrown into the Oculus Home of the Rift S., Which is a fantastic place to be. The more time you will spend in it, the more it will be attached with you, and at some point, Oculus Home will start to feel like your apartment, with a fireplace and a bar with a gorgeous view.

And also, the “Home” offers a menu in front of you and gives you the ability to scroll it from left to right, exploring popular games & apps, store, library, social, notifications, etc.

VR Games

Rift S has an impressive collection of virtual games. However, the majority of them like very short demos and which only lasts a few hours. It also lacks Triple-A games because this VR doesn’t have to offer even a single game.

But the new games similar to Half-Life: Alyx (VR game) and the top-hit games – Beat Saber (VR music game) make a four-start immersive experience. Its gaming store also offers you well-known games – Vader Immortal (VR action sci-fi game) that throws you into an epic & lightsaber battle.

And the games like Marvel Powers United VR that put you in the cloths of your favorite superheroes, from Wolverine to Spider-Man, you can suit yourself. And the games like Beat Saber which will give you an unforgettable immersive VR experience.

Controller

In-case, if you are unfamiliar with the Oculus Touch controllers, it has an amazingly comfortable and perfect grip. Each controller weights 3.7 ounces, and they both come with a lanyard. When it comes to the area, it covered 4.7 x 4.3 x 3.5 and which is a perfect size of a controller.

Our experts were impressed by the performance of Oculus Controllers. These controllers give you independent control of your thumbs and index finger. However, playing a game like Beat Saber, a high level of accuracy is required, and gladly these controllers deliver it ultimately.

The best way to test the performance these controllers are on a game is by playing a game like Beat Saber through these controllers. The way they will perform alongside the Beat Saber game that may earn your trust.

Oculus Rift S Controllers

Audio

Its integrated speakers are one of our favorite things about Oculus S., Which cut down the weight and still delivers High-Res and High-Quality audio.

While playing a game like Beat Saber, it delivers an immersive virtual experience. However, the speakers are too loud, which completely removes the bass.

Playing games is the best way of experiencing its speaker’s quality. When it comes to choosing from games, we prefer picking up a sci-fi action game and giving it a shot.

Store

It is straightforward to access the Oculus Store. You can interact with it through the VR or desktop mode. The overall layout of the store is exceptional and missing some key features.

The store also missing some navigation features that make the navigation a bit annoying and if you are in VR and exploring the store so remember that there is no search bar in the store a better option will ignore that and go for the desktop version of the store and do your searching and purchasing out there and from outside the virtual world.

You can’t have the application or game page from the library. You should have to search the game individually over the Oculus website, and there you will be able to see it.

Now let talk about actually purchasing and downloading the game/application. The store page is ultra-clear and lays out the comfort-level, price, and ESRB rating. Before purchasing, it gives you a beautiful little trailer and screenshots of gameplay.

Display

Rift S preferred using a single fast-switching panel (LCD panel) of a resolution 2560 x 1440, refresh rate of 80 Hz, and it is downed from 10 Hz from the previous model, but our experts don’t find it that much different.

It delivers a higher detail image and reduces the screen-door effect. Oculus S uses next-gen lenses technology, which almost eliminates god rays. The field of view of Oculus S is 115 degrees.

Social

As you know that Facebook owns the Oculus Rift S, and that’s why you are not going to have any trouble connecting with people. You can link up to all your current Facebook friends by the blink of an eye.

If you don’t like Facebook or don’t want to use it, no worries, you can always rely on your Oculus username to make new friends. Overall the social activities it offers are very basics.

Some of our experts have one issue with the social activities on this VR, and that is, there isn’t a tab for recent-activity players and that a lack because otherwise, you have to keep track of your recent friend’s activities manually.

Insight Tracking

Unlike the previous Rift & Oculus Quest in which the headset was tracked through the external sensors, the Oculus S uses an inside-out tracking system which is called Oculus Insight.

This system uses a combination of five built-in cameras that get information about your movement and tracking with the help of three other integrated tracking devices and translate your movement and position into VR.

Oculus Rift S: Our Analysis & Test Results

Our experts individually tested The Oculus Rift S, and it did fine in each of our tests. This headset provides supreme performance. Its design is still the best, but not perfect.

Oculus Rift S is an all-time favorite VR headset of our experts and a VR product that we would recommend to most people.

Lack of external sensors doesn’t affect its accuracy in tracking but instead became a reason for easy setup. It’s almost as user-friendly as a mobile or a standalone VR headset.

Interactiveness

Interactiveness is our first set of tests. In this zone review, we are focused on how interactive Rift S is. Scores from this metric are responsible for 40% of the final product rate, and these scores are based on a few things like accuracy in motion tracking, its interface, and limitations on the room-scale experience.

Rift S did tremendously and earned 7 out of 10. Oculus Rift S is a top-tier VR and a favorite choice of our experts.

When it came to the insight tracking of the Rift S Oculus, it got off to a bit-rough start. In the beginning, its cameras seem a bit glitchy & sometimes the screen started blacking out. However, after adding some strain relief to the tether with the help of some cables ties, these problems begin to decrease.

After dealing with that all, our experts were impressed with the accuracy of the overall tracking mechanism. The tracking of your position is just perfect while wearing this VR. Motion controllers work fine and perfectly tracks the motion, but you may experience some occasional issues around.

If you move the controllers behind your back or if you are moving them extremely quickly, they may periodically be lost the position tracking. In our test, it usually recovered quickly. This issue isn’t too much concern, but it can lead to some frustration with games similar to Beat Saber.

By the way, we like the design of Rift S motion controllers, which are Oculus Touch. As we said before, they feel very natural & comfortable to hold, and they can fit perfectly in the majority of different hand-sizes.

Overall, it enables you to enjoy an exceptionally interactive VR environment to get around & lost-in quickly. The Oculus Touch tracked very accurately. It’s built on an inside-out tracking system.

That’s why there is no reliance on external sensors but instead using its headset built-in five cameras to monitor your position/movement. That means that there are no limitations on room-scale experience while using Rift S Oculus. The only thing that will limit you is its length of the tether.

Oculus Rift S Inner Look

Visual Impressiveness

With its display, the Rift S did an excellent job of immersing you in your royal-virtual experience. Visual impressiveness is our next metric of review, and it is responsible for 20% of the final rating.

In this one, our experts compare the screen resolution, the sharpness of the image/visuals, overall viewing & experiencing quality, and field of view, as well as the ambient light, blocked out. The Rift S did tremendously and earned 9 out of 10. Rift S is the best one so far.

Rift S let in a little amount of outside light in some cases and still wholly blocking the sun but, it all depends on the shape of your nose.

It has a resolution of 1280 x 1440 pixels per eye, and that leads to a crystal clear and sharp visuals/images. In-game texts are elementary to read.

The overall visual quality of this headset is phenomenal. Although, it did drop some of the refresh rates to 80 Hz as compared to the previous Rift, and that was 90 Hz. However, our experts had a hard time to identify the difference.

Its FOV (Field of View) seemed a little narrower to our experts and witch are 110 degrees. A couple of other virtual headsets we tried, which had the same FOV and seemed a little bit more.

Comfort

The tension knob of the Oculus Rift S headset makes it extremely easy to adjust it to a relaxing & comfortable position. This matric is responsible for 18% of the overall rating.

Our experts wear it for an extended period to check if it had adequate padding, got overly sweaty, and if there is enough room to wear glasses. Oculus Rift S did exceptionally well and earned 8 out of 10.

On the majority of faces, it fits perfectly. With the bits of help of its plastic ring, it became easier to distribute the weight around your head equally. Its front is a bit heavier, which is a problem of almost every single VR.

The one-sided cord on this VR makes it feel like a slightly unbalanced. The strap on this headset does an excellent job distributing the weight over & around your head but doesn’t help to reduce the load on your face. This strap has ample padding.

It’s effortless to adjust the Rift S Oculus knob while adjusting. If you wear glasses, then this VR has a unique feature for you, a button to slide the visor out.

No matter what type or size the frame has, it will fit just perfectly. You can feel a little bit of pressure with glasses on, but ut’s hardly noticeable. For long gaming sessions, it doesn’t get much warm quickly, and you get around less sweaty.

User Friendliness

Oculus Rift S is the most simple & easy to wear virtual headsets. In this matrix, we compare how much of a pain it is in use regularly & every time you on the headset, how much time it takes from on to start playing a game, setting up headphones, accident frequency while using, and difficulty level when putting or taking off the Rift S.

These assessments are responsible for 12% of the final rating. Rift S did supreme and earned 9 out of 10. According to our experts, it’s the most hassle-free VR experience.

Rift S Oculus enables you with its integrated speakers so that you don’t have to worry about setting up the external headphones. However, in-game audio can leak out, and environmental noise can get around much in.

In case, keep your headphones in reach. Our experts recommend using High-Tech & High-Res certified headphones to experience an immersive VR world. Lack of external sensors doesn’t affect its accuracy and still makes it much easier to set up.

All you need is a room-scale space and enough light for cameras to detect your movement and position tracking. All left is your tether connected to your PC, plug that in if it isn’t already connected.

To bring it into focus, adjust the strap, which is extremely easy, and you can still change the interpupillary distance (IPD) from the settings menu. You are sporadic chances of an accident while wearing this headset because there aren’t any buttons on the headset.

Ease of Setup

The Rift S does require an initial setup to hook up to your high-quality gaming PC. You heard it right; your PC must be a “Vroom! Vroom! Ferrari” if you want to use a VR, which provides a quality immersive virtual experience.

It doesn’t all depend upon your headset. This matrix is responsible for the remaining 10% of the final rating. This scoring consist of the work it took from unboxing to playing games on it, as well as looking at the amount of hardware is required to setup.

The Oculus Rift S did superbly and earned 9 out of 10. It remained quite useful in this regard. But, it requires a bit expensive additional hardware to run.

As we know, there are no external sensors to deal with, the only hardware it requires to operate is some batteries for controllers, and that’s it. Installing software is still reasonably painless.

Just download the Rift S Oculus software, create an account, update drivers, and update the firmware. Afterward, you’ll be able to set up the “Guardian” and go through some tutorials.

The PC requirements are slightly more than the previous Rift requires. We wrote somewhere in this article about the PC requirements for Rift S Oculus. All you have to do is just find them.

Playing with Oculus Rift S Headset

Conclusion

The Oculus Rift S is quite a good value, and it offers a top-tier quality virtual experience. It’s our top recommendation for the individuals who want an excellent, top-quality virtual experience.

Rift S lacks a few small sides features that some other headsets have and the thing is these are hardly noticeable and only visible to the hardcore VR enthusiasts. Those VR headsets still cost x2 of what it is offering.
